Student Tuition Recovery Fund and Defense to Repayment GOOD NEWS! You may have the right to access the Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) and/or assert a defense to repayment. Certain former WyoTech and Everest Colleges students may now be eligible to submit a streamlined defense to repayment application. The Student Tuition Recovery Fund (STRF) can pay off your student loans and reimburse you for funds you spent on your education. The STRF is available for students who paid the STRF assessment fee and were enrolled or on an approved leave of absence at the time of closure or who were enrolled within 120 days of the closure. You may also be eligible to assert a defense to repayment of your student loans. By doing so, you would claim that your school violated the law with regard to your loans or the educational services you paid for. For example, it is a violation of the law for schools to report false job placement statistics to prospective students. Based on information from the California Department of Justice, the U.S. Department of Education recently announced that WyoTech and Everest Colleges misrepresented job placement rates for many of its programs of study between 2010 and 2014. WyoTech and Everest students, who were enrolled in one of these programs of study and relied on the misrepresented job placement rates, may be eligible for a streamlined defense to repayment application. See the “Application Process” below for additional details. IMPORTANT! In the upcoming weeks, the U.S. Department of Education will be releasing a streamlined form that eligible WyoTech and Everest students can use to assert a defense to repayment. If you would like us to notify you when this form is available, please be sure to submit your contact information here: Contact Information Page. ( https://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/corinthian-colleges/students ) In order to access this relief, you will need to meet minimum eligibility requirements and submit an application. ( http://oag.ca.gov/consumers/general/corinthian-colleges/directions ) Defense to Repayment: As discussed above, the U.S. Department of Education announced that certain WyoTech and Everest Colleges programs misrepresented job placement rates during 2010 to 2014. Students who were enrolled in these programs are eligible for a streamlined application for a defense to repayment. If you were a student at Everest, check to see if you were enrolled in one of the eligible programs listed on this chart: oag.ca.gov/corinthian/Everest. If you were a student at WyoTech, check to see if you were enrolled in one of the eligible programs listed on this chart: oag.ca.gov/corinthian/WyoTech. If you were enrolled in one of the programs listed on the charts during the eligible dates, contact your local legal aid organization to ask for assistance in reviewing your eligibility and submitting an application for relief. If your program of study and/or your dates of study are NOT covered by this list, you may still want to contact your local legal aid office to discuss your eligibility for a defense to repayment application and other relief options. The U.S. Department of Education continues to work on streamlining the defense to repayment application. You will be able to find information on how to submit an application and updates to the application process by visiting: https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/about/announcements/corinthian#fraud-violations-state-law. Because the Department is still working on creating a streamlined process to assert this defense, make sure to create multiple copies of your application prior to submitting your application. You may need to resubmit your application in the future, once the process has been finalized. IMPORTANT! If you would like us to notify you when the U.S. Department of Education releases a streamlined defense to repayment application form for eligible WyoTech and Everest students, please be sure to submit your contact information here: Contact Information Page. IMPORTANT! Be sure to apply for a loan forbearance, which will relieve you of the obligation to make payments on your loans while you wait for a decision from the U.S. Department of Education.
